Looking back at 2010
I've been paging through
my 2010 diary and found myself amazed at what we have completed and
accomplished this year. From finally getting the website up and
going, to fashion finalists and then to a fabulous graduate show.
With this nostalgia, I thought it best to share these 2010 memories with
you, and whilst doing this, we're looking forward to a great 2011 with many
more fashion challenges, events and new courses.
This however is just a small sampling of our year........
2010 kicked off with a
bang, with the news that 4 NWSD students were selected as nationwide
finalists for the Vukani Young Designers Awards. Yolande Maree,
Nadine Roodt, Joani Pieterse and FX Prins featured in various national
Recycle on the Catwalk
February 2010, NWSD
students showcased their showpiece fashion garments at the annual
Advertising Fashion show, whereby students designed, made and modelled
garments by using branding material supplied by shops in the Klerksdorp
City Ma'll. Later on in the year, students got to do this all
over again for tenants of the River Square centre in Vereeniging.
Run'way Run'away at Rio
March 2010, NWSD
facilitated the largest model casting event in North West. Over 220
models attended the casting and 40 models were selected to be trained on
international run'way modelling, by Xenn Models.
Double up on the style J&B
Two NWSD graduate
designers scooped top awards at the 2010 J&B Met. Gert Johan
Coetzee dresses Thembi Seete who won best dressed couple. Anel Botha
and partner Graham Calver, wearing her designs, won best themed
Vodacom Durban July
Three NWSD students were
selected as semi finalists for the 2010 Vodacom Durban July Young
Designer's Awards. Yolande Maree, Ofelia Andrade and Stiena

You Spectacular Awards
Graduates Gert Johan
Coetzee and Anel Botha both dressed a number of celebrities for the 2010
You Spectacular Awards. Both graduate's designs were featured in the

And so we got to rub
shoulders with SA's A-list celebs at Gert Johan Coetzee's launch of his
self titled lable.
NWSD student Yolande
Maree has been selected as a Finalist for the Foschini/Nokia Fashion Design
Awards. Yolande's Foschini range was showcased at the Cape Town

The Business Award
Wesvaal Chamber of
Business awarded NWSD with the Small Enterprise of the year
Three for Bridal Africa
Three NWSD students were
selected as semi-finalists for the 2010 Bridal Africa Young Designers
Awards. Yolande Maree, Ofelia Andrade and Althea van der Linde.
Then, Ofelia went through as national finalist.
NWSD graduates Gert
Johan Coetzee and Anel Botha dressed several celebs for the 2010
Skouspel. Both designers were featured in Huisgenoot, You and the
SA Designer of the year
Gert Johan Coetzee was
voted for (by the public) as True Love Magazine SA Designer of the year.
Decades of fashion
6 November 2010 saw the
annual graduation show whereby students showcased their graduating ranges
to the theme: Decades.

New courses and challenges
With the birth of our
new website, also came the introduction of the following new courses:
Fashion Events Management, Fashion Marketing, Fashion Buying,
Fashion Photo'graphy, Gap Year Courses, Fashion Management.
Now combine this with our existing courses in Photo'graphy, fulltime
Clothing design &Technology, part time fashion, window
and the resu'lt is over 20 NWSD courses.
We have a course for you! Our courses are
like a fun puzz'le, they fit into one another and you can build your own
puzz'le to suit your creative needs and challenges.
Custom will reconcile people to any atrocity; and fashion will drive
them to acquire any custom.
About half my designs are controlled fan'tasy, 15 percent are total
madness and the rest are bread-and-butter designs. Manolo
