I reported last month that North West School of Design would be well represented at the annual Vukani Fashion Awards.  This months' news update is that Yolande Maree won the High Fashion Award on 26 June 2010. A huge congratulations to Yolande and we know you will enjoy your machine sponsorship  from Bernina!.  A great big thank you to our other finalists, Nadine, FX and Joani for being enthusiastic NWSD ambassadors.    And also a great big thank you to Yolande and the finalists for adding more value to the North West School of Design brand!

Cape Town Fashion Week awaits Yolande Maree

Also in last month's news, I told you about the wonderful news that a NWSD 2nd year fashion student has been selected as one of the 10 nationwide finalists for the Foschini Fashion Awards.  Yolande Maree has since then submitted her completed garments for judging.  Great news is that Yolande has successfully proceeded to the next round, being that she is now one of the top 6 that will showcase her range at the Cape Town Fashion Week.  The winner will also be announced at the Cape Town Fashion Week.  We wish Yolande the best for the finals.

Anel to dress the president's daugther

During October 2004, Anel Botha entered the North West School of Design, Annual “Design your Future” Bursary Contest.  Her designs, “Monopoly” and “Playing with Fire” astounded the audience of the annual Graduation  Fashion Show, and she walked away with the bursary to study Clothing Design and Technology at North West School of Design.

In March 2006, Anel Botha (then a second year student) got selected as nationwide Bridal Africa semi-finalist in the Avant Garde / Evening Wear category.  In the same year, at the 2006 Graduation Fashion Show, she walked away with the honours, “Designer of the Year 2006”.  This is the highest accolade for a NWSD student.  After completion of her studies, she went to complete an internship, at the Parys-based designer, Michael Bezuidenhout as one of her prizes that she won as 'Designer of the year'.  During her internship she was selected as a finalist for the Huisgenoot / You Gomma-Gomma Ubuntu Fashion Challenge.

In 2007 she relocated back to her hometown, Klerksdorp where she and her then business-partner, Jose de Canha (also a NWSD graduate) started their studio, “Anha-K” couture.  Anel and Jose soon became forces to be reckoned with, as they were inundated to design evening gowns for Matric Farewells and wedding gowns.  Anha K sponsored various pageants including Miss Klerksdorp 2008.

Another career highlight for Anel, now working under her own label, “Anel Botha Couture”, was when her designs were chosen at the J&B Met in Cape Town in February 2010 as the “Best Themed Couple” at the Met.  Newspaper and Top Billing coverage  soared her into success.

Anel & Graham at the J& B Met

Morgan McBride, wore a design of Anel Botha when she walked away with the title, of SA Top Model 2010.

Anel continues on the path of fashion success as she has designed for actress, Zikhona Sodlaka and  is now currently busy with a design for Gugu Zuma, the daughter of State President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma and Isidingo actress.  This design, Gugu will wear to the You Spectacular 2010!

In May 2010, Anel opened her Rivonia studio and she now runs both the Klerksorp and Rivonia studios with a fashionably entrepreunial flair.  Anel Botha also employed NWSD graduate, Palesa Mayebase as Assistant Designer based at the Klerksdorp studio.

Corset making secrets revealed in new book

My second book is about to be published!  Yes, I have written book number 2:  The South African Corsetiere

The edit copy has been printed and edited, and during the first week in August, 50 Desk Copies will be printed for viewing by book shops and endorsements by designers.  The 220 page book includes all the secrets of corset designing, corset making and fitting of the modern corset.  Over the years, lecturer Marina Alberts and myself have overseen the design, make and fit of hundreds of corsets.  We have been faced with a number of construction and fitting problems, and we have with trial and error, developed many solutions and alternatives for corset making.  I have also researched the topic in books, internet and by interviewing designers and corsetierers.  I have unravelled many corsets to get to the construction secrets.  All these findings toghether with our experience have now been put to pen and photo.  In this book I share many secrets with you.  In my endless quest to design & make the perfect corset, I have found that most South African designers and corsetiers are very secrtetive about their corset making techniques.  This is because, in SA, we have been forced to test (through trial and error), many alternative products and methods.  This is simply because we have not had the traditional corset making tools, materials and equipment available to us.

corset.jpg
Surprisingly, my research have also shown me that the internet is not the best research tool for the South African corsetiere.  This is due to the fact that the word corset has varouis meanings in various countries, and that corset making materials differs from country to country, so do styles, and wearer's preferences.  I have therefore focussed on making corsets with what is available in our country.  Most importantly of all, the book also focusses on corsets for the South African lady.

If you simply can not wait for the book to hit the shelves, then you can order one of the Desk Copies @ R200-00.  Just send my a reply email, or sms me on 083 639 9790

Platinum Fashion Forum was a success

On Friday, 18 June designers and manufactures from North West province met at North West School of Design to discuss issues affecting the Fashion industry within our province.

The objective of the forum is that, together we
find solutions to ultimately ensure the sustainability of our industry.
fashion forum.jpg
Topics that were discussed:  The pro's and con's of employing interns.  Feedback from designers resulted in the implementation of an internship programme that could sustain positive results for employer, intern and college.

We also discussed staffing issues, training of staff and a lack of qualified production staff within the province. I am very pleased that we could, as a group of designers and manufactures assist each other with success stories and suggestions.  We have all learned from each other and gained much needed motivation, guidelines and assistance from one another.

Thank you
